Hinderwell is situated approximately
one mile from Staithes and is home to the local Parish
Council. St Hilda’s Church stands on the left hand side
of the A174 as you approach the village from Staithes.
Originally called Hilderwell,
it was named after St. Hilda the Abbess of Whitby. It
is said that while passing through the village at a time
of drought St. Hilda was asked to pray for water. The
next morning on a nearby hillside in what is now the churchyard
a spring appeared. These waters were believed to have
healing powers, the spring still bubbles away in the church
yard to this day.
Legend has it that Hinderwell Church
was originally going to be built on chapel field - where
the cemetery is now - the story goes that the stones for
the church were placed into chapel field ready for building
to begin. The next day when the stonemasons returned to
start building the stones had been moved to the sight
were the present church is. They moved the stones back
to chapel field only to find that the following morning
they had been moved back again. At this point it was decided
that some divine intervention had taken place and the
church was built on its present site.
