Location:
Port Mulgrave
Geology: Early Jurassic
Area: Beach and cliff
Type of fossils: Ammonites,
belemnites and many more
Likely find: Very high
Dangers: High from cliff falls
and rising tides
Equipment: Hammer and chisel
for splitting nodules
Facilities: Poor
Access is poor, it is a long walk
down a steep cliff path. Not suitable for anyone with walking
difficulties or small children. This area has been
listed as a danger zone due to cliff falls. Hammering
anywhere near the cliffs could result in starting a cliff
fall and injury. Keep your distance.
Look for fossils among the boulders
and along the foreshore. By doing this you are helping protect
the cliffs from erosion. Fossils
can be found all year round at Port Mulgrave. Look for nodules
of pale grey rock which often contain complete ammonites
when cracked open. Belemnites and fossilised shells can
also be found along the foreshore. Many of the best fossils
can be found in among the latest cliff falls but these are
the most dangerous areas to search. Sifting through the
scree slopes can yield some good and often larger specimens.
