Welcome to the peaceful hamlet
of Dalehouse, which lies on the outskirts of Staithes
down a quiet country lane. It offers walks through beautiful
countryside showing a different beauty with each season.
Roxby beck flows through the hamlet
on its way to the sea and fish can be seen swimming in
its bubbling waters. However if you wish to fish here
you do require a licence. For the more energetic amongst
you, you can follow the road up hill to Roxby and on round
to Borrowby and back into Dalehouse.
If you just wish to relax then
a slow walk to beck meetings where a ford crosses the
road will suit. Along the way there is a seat over looking
the beck for those who wish for a more leisurely walk
and to take time for quiet reflection. It always seems
to be much warmer down here than in the rest of the village.
As you walk down the bank into
Dalehouse, you will see a road that runs along side of
the pub. This takes you to a stone bridge crossing the
beck, if you follow this road it brings you out in the
culvert on the Loftus side of Staithes. If you carry on
past the pub to the road junction you will see a row of
cottages on your left. Two of these cottages were once
the cottage hospital for Grinkle Pit, which was part of
the Ironstone mine.
