The Cleveland Way actually
starts near Helmsley and winds it way via Sutton Bank to
Osmotherley and on to Roseberry Topping. From there it goes
past Guisborough Priory and on to Saltburn. On leaving Saltburn
it follows the cliff top to Staithes.
You will pick the Cleveland way up
in the parish
of Hinderwell as you cross Roxby
Beck from Cowbar and head up Abrahams Lane. When you come
out of this narrow lane follow the High Street to the Staith
just pass the Cod and Lobster pub. On your right you will
see Church Street, go up here and at the top you will come
to a dirt path follow it for approximately 15 – 20 yards
and you will see another path going off to your left, take
this and you are on the Cleveland Way as it goes along the
top of the cliffs to Port
Mulgrave and then on to Runswick
Bay.
After leaving Runswick
Bay it follows the cliff top through Kettleness, Sandsend
and on to Whitby. From there it follows the coastline down
through Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar, Scarborough and on to
Filey Brigg where it ends.
This walk offers fantastic views
over moor land and coast, taking you through picturesque
villages and popular seaside towns. On its coastal stretch
it takes you over the highest cliffs in England at 666ft.
On your way you can also explore abbeys and castles with
fascinating histories. However it is strenuous in places
and not easy walking.
When taking this walk do make
sure you are equipped for any change in the weather and
are wearing appropriate foot wear. Remember you are responsible
for your own safety so do not go too near cliff edges and
if you decide to go on a beach please check tide times as
it is easy to get trapped by an incoming tide. If you take
your dog with you please keep it under control at all times
and on a lead when crossing farm land or where there are
sheep.
