Information on Parish beaches...

Staithes Beach

Seaton Garth is the sea front where you will find the beach at Staithes. The old meaning of the word garth was an enclosed area. On one side you have a high cliff called Penny Nab, while two more sides are surrounded by houses.

To the front is the beach which although not very big is a nice place to spend a few quiet hours. It is an ideal place for children to play. The front of the beach is protected by the piers and rock armour which guard it from rough seas. Colourful fishing cobles can be seen bobbing about in the harbour.

Staithes beach is renowned for surfing but it isn’t the beach that the surfers use, the surfing is referred to as ‘Staithes Reef’. The surfers like it for two reasons, firstly it doesn’t get too crowded; and secondly, for a hollow barrelling wave and its left hand break which we understand is unusual. The average length of ride is 50 – 100 metres. Winter and spring offer the best waves.

There are no lifeguards on the beach but life saving equipment is available. The beach is not really large enough to exercise your dog but if you do it is covered by the dog fouling act. Please note that although you will see parking places on Seaton Garth these are for residents only.
.

Runswick Bay Beach

This long sandy beach is a lovely place to spend a few quiet hours. It has plenty of room for children to play and for your dog to have a good long run.

The Runswick Bay Beach and Sailing Club is situated approximately 0.5 mile along the beach from the village. It has a dining area with BBQ and bar facilities. Other facilities include changing rooms with toilets and showers. It is open Sundays from April to October.

There are no lifeguards on the beach but the village does have its own rescue boat. The car park for the beach is at the bottom of the bank right next to the beach.
.

Port Mulgrave Beach

There is no sandy beach at Port Mulgrave it consists of shale and mud, however it does have one advantage over its neighbours in the fact that it is a great place for fossil hunters at all times of the year.

Its main disadvantage is that the path down is very steep and not good for people with walking difficulties or families with push chairs. If you do go fossil hunting please watch out for rock falls as these happen quite frequently.

Please respect other beach users. Thank you.
